In New Zealand, a lovely tradition is for your children to choose one expensive decoration for the tree each year. Have a special box for each child with their decorations in. When they are ready to leave home, they will have a whole box full of beautiful decorations to take with them. Each Christmas they are away from home they can have a link to every Christmas of their childhood.
In Italy, presents and sometimes empty boxes are drawn from the "Urn of Fate" - a lucky dip, which always contains one gift per person.
In Norway, "sand kager" is a favourite holiday cookie. Mix together 2 cups each of softened butter and sugar, 4 cups of flour and 1 cup of chopped almonds. Press into a tin and bake until golden brown. Once cool, cut into squares.
